A focal plane shutter includes a front screen and a rear screen, the latter being locked in a cocked position by an electromagnet through a locking lever while the electromagnet is energized. The locking lever is biased in a direction to contact the electromagnet and lock the rear screen. When the electromagnet is de-energized after a time period controlled by an electric circuit, the rear screen is driven against the bias of the locking lever.
