The unit for coating boards with e.g. adhesive includes a stand (7) for supporting a container (13) filled with adhesive. The boards are passed over a horizontal roller (3) across the top, which is partly immersed in the adhesive. The shape of the container can be modified so that the depth of adhesive (12) which it contains is sufficient to cover the roller when vertical. The roller is cantilever supported when operating, connected to a drive (30,31) at the top of the frame, to rotate above the container. The roller, with its bearing unit (9) attached, is swung about a horizontal axis (11) at right angles to its own axis for complete immersion. The input end (29) of its spindle is disconnected from the output end (23) of the driving shaft in the fully immersed position.
