The installation is used for lifting metal barrels into and out of a heavy goods vehicle container etc. in which the barrels are stacked transverse to the direction of unloading. The installation is fitted with a linear conveyor. Between the container(2) and conveyor(5) is a movable loading system(6). The system is fitted with rows of grippers(I,II,III) which are arranged at each point where rows of containers are positioned. The grippers(27) are moved forward by sliders(24), to engage the selected barrels which then deposited within the loading installation to be conveyed as required.
