Synthetic diamonds are produced by subjecting a mixture of non-diamond carbon (defined) and nickel and magnesium or a nickel/magnesium alloy to a temperature of from 1095‹ to 1150‹ C. and a pressure of from 45,620 atms. to 49,000 atms. and cooling the resultant product. Free or chemically bound carbon i.e. inorganic and organic compounds which decompose to yield free carbon under the reaction conditions, may be used as the carbon source. |
