Al-based members and steel members have their surfaces bonded together by first cleaning and then hot pressure bonding. The bonding comprises providing a layer of angular grains of Si in association with at least one of the surfaces to be bonded, protecting the Si and the surfaces to be bonded from oxidn., heating the surfaces to 500-6500oC, subjecting the members with the surfaces to be bonded in interface to pressure and cooling the bonded members to below the eutectic temperature.
