PURPOSE:To prepare (-)-alpha-hydroxymethylbutyric acid by treating (-)-alpha-methyl- butyric acid with microorganisms belonging to Candida genus. CONSTITUTION:(-)-alpha-Methylbutyric acid is microorganisms belonging to Candida genus, e.g. Candida rugosa IFO0750 strain, in a medium containing (-)-alpha-methylbutyric acid at 4.0-9.5pH. As an alternative method, (-)-alpha-hydroxymethyllbutyric acid is prepared by culturing the above microorganisms in a nutrient medium at 4.0-9.5pH, adding (+ or -)-alpha-methylbutyric acid to the cultivation liquid or the suspension of microorganisms obtained from the liquid, and reacting under aerobic conditions keeping the pH at 6.0-9.0. |
