PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the titled adduct having improved hydrophilicity, by substituting hydrogen atoms of hydroxyl groups in p-vinylphenol polymer with an alkali metal to provide a phenolate and reacting the resultant phenolate with ethylene oxide in an anhydrous state. CONSTITUTION:An ethylene oxide adduct, obtained by substituting part or all of hydrogen atoms of hydroxyl groups in p-vinylphenol polymer having 3-5,000 polymerization degree with an alkali metal to provide a phenolate and reacting the resultant phenolate in an anhydrous state with ethylene oxide, consisting of 5-100mol.% constituent units expressed by formula I (n is 1-100; M is H or alkali metal) and remainder mol.% of constituent units expressed by formula II as principal constituent units, having a structure in which the above-mentioned respective constituent units are randomly linked to the backbone chain and 3-5,000 polymerization degree. The above-mentioned adduct is used as a raw material for nonionic high polymer surfactants, polyurethane resins, etc.
