PURPOSE:To prevent the bowing of a steel strip in the lateral direction during horizontal electroplating at a position away from electrifying rolls, by specifying the surface hardness of backup rolls. CONSTITUTION:The surface hardness of backup rolls 1 used to transfer a steel strip 2 in contact with electrifying rolls 3 during horizontal electroplating is regulated to HDD 50-70 (JIS K-7215). In case of generally used electrifying rolls 3 of about 300mm diameter and backup rolls 1 each is coated with a layer of 20-30mm thickness onto outer surface of metal rolls, the contact width l2 is reduced to <=8mm by regulating the hardness of the rolls 1 to HDD 50-70. The bowing of the steel strip 2 can be surely prevented and defects such as difference in the amt. of a metal deposited by plating and a short circuit between the strip 2 and an electrode 4 can be eliminated.
