PRODUCTION OF OIL-MODIFIED RESIN PHENOL RESIN FOR PRINTING INK

PURPOSE:To produce titled resin having excellent gloss and drying property, by reacting a phenol with a formaldehyde-generating compound, a specified animal or vegetable oil, a rosin and an alcohol. CONSTITUTION:An oil-modified rosin phenol resin, acid value <=30, softening point >=60 deg.C, suitable as a vehicle for offset printing inks is prepared by reacting a phenol, e.g., cresol, a formaldehyde-generating compound, e.g., formaline, an animal or vegetable oil, iodine value >=100, e.g., tall oil, a rosin, e.g., gum resin, a monohydric alcohol and/or a polyhydric alcohol, e.g., ethylene glycol and, optionally, at least one member selected from the group consisting of a monobasic acid, a polybasic acid, e.g., maleic acid, and a pertoleum resin, e.g., polyisoprene at 100-160 deg.C for 1-9hr and then at 200-280 deg.C for 3-10hr.
