Cage is made by winding the filament circumferentially whilst making suitable turns round the balls already assembled or round equivalent spaced pegs on a former, the filaments being bonded together. The finished shape is that of radical sleeve pockets for the balls, united into a continuous ring cage by the filaments going from one pocket to the next. Filament may be e.g. steel or titanium wire bonded by fusion, or pref. glass fibre bonded with epoxy resin. Pockets can be contoured to prevent balls dropping out. Used e.g. for deep groove bearings formerly needing two piece cage, and giving high strength/weight ratio, flexibility and cheapness. |
