<p>A latex paint which sets at room temp. to form a hardened film and contg. 30-70 wt. % solids, comprises, based on dry solids volume, (a) 25-70% film-forming latex binder comprising mainly polymer (I) particles of dia. 1000-10,000 Angstroms (I) having a Tg which is at least 5 degrees C lower than the coalescing temp. of the latex and being formed from ethylenically unsatd. (co)monomers, (b) 10-60% non film forming polymer (II) particles, which are solid and non cellular and have an av. dia. of 1000-10,000 A and a Tg which is greater than that of the latex polymer by at least 30 degrees C, (II) being formed from ethylenically unsatd. monomers, (c) 5-25% of an opacifying binder with a refractive index >=1.8 and (d) 0-60% of a non opacifying pigment. The latex paint has a pigment volume content (PVC) of 30-75%, higher than the critical PVC measured by opacity. The latex paint may contain a large amt. of non-film forming components and still forms coherent coatings which have superior gloss than the similar conventional compsns. and good resistance to soiling, coal dust, stains, abrasion and washing.</p> |
