Hydrogenated and epoxidised polybutadienes are made by (A) hydrogenation of 70-99% of the unsat. constituents of a polybutadiene with 25-80% 1,2-units, the remainder being 1,4-units, (B) epoxidation of all or most of the remaining unsat. units so that less than 5% of the units remain unsat., opt. followed by (C) addn. of a cpd. with active hydrogen to at least part of the epoxidised units. Used as multi-functional additives for lubricating oils. Improvement in viscosity index is greater than that produced by polyolefine additives. They also give dispersant, detergent and anti-oxidant properties, and have improved resistance to shear. Flow point of the oils is reduced. Compatibility with various types of mineral and synthetic lubricating oils is good.
|
