Plastics materials to be used for the prodn. of receptacles, containers, conduits, etc., which may come into contact with or contain products contg. or which may contain microorganisms, are treated by incorporating selenium or a heavy metal into the plastics compsn. during its mfr. Pref. compsn. is a selenium- contg. plastic such as PVC or polyethylene, with a Se/plastic ratio of 1/1000 to 1/10000. The treated plastics exhibit excellent resistance to the growth of microorganisms and are esp. useful for prodn. of containers and receptacles for food, bottles, surgical tubing, catheters, blood bags, water pipe, etc. Parent specification (FR application 74-FR-14574 24.04.74) relates to a similar process for treating foodstuff, hygeine, clothing and medical products.
