Safety device for the steering wheels of motor vehicles, which device consists of an axially deformable hub (8) which encloses a chamber (9) which is normally filled with a pressurised gas and terminated at the front by a plate (6) in which a diaphragm (22) is provided which breaks when the hub is deformed and above which an elastic film (20) is provided at the end, on which film (20) the pressurised gas impinges when the diaphragm breaks and which film as a result forms an elastic cushion (23) in front of the steering wheel (1). The device shortens the response time and is capable of ensuring adequate protection to the driver when he strikes against the steering wheel, without forming a perceptible impedance when actuated unintentionally. <IMAGE>
