Vapour separator for IC engine fuel - has float operated valve in vapour outlet to balance flow variations

The separator has a cylindrical housing (1) with a fuel inlet (2) in the side near the top and an outlet (3) for liquid fuel at the bottom. A pipe (8) at the top of the cylinder contains an outlet (4)for fuel vapour. A float (6) in the cylinder carries a needle type valve (5) which controls the opening into the pipe (8) and thus to the vapour outlet. This maintains the surface between liquid and vapour at a constant level and compensates for variations in density due to temp. changes. A connection (10) from the cylinder to the top (7) of the valve equalises the pressure on the valve.
