An index wheel for inscription machines having a multiplicity of type wheels mounted so as to rotate coaxially adjacent to one another, each type wheel being provided on its circumference with a multiplicity of in each case type-carrying webs and having on the external circumference a multiplicity of engaging grooves which are constructed in each case between two adjacent webs. The index wheel can be brought into engagement with each of said type wheels in such a manner that the type wheels are offset in rotation when the index wheel is rotated manually by means of a selector shaft and a selector button. The index wheel comprises an annular body and a multiplicity of teeth which are constructed in the outer circumference of the annular body and are at a distance from one another in the circumferential direction such that they can engage with the engaging grooves provided in the type wheels. Furthermore, a multiplicity of index characters is provided which are arranged in each case on the outer circumference of the annular body between two adjacent teeth and are formed by means of an inscription method, including hot stamping.
