1,224,376. Air pumps. AQUARIUMS Inc. April 10, 1968 [May 23, 1967], No.17336/68. Heading F1N. An aquarium air pump comprises a vibratory member 264 mounted adjacent an A.C. motor for driving an aquarium accessory so that in use the member 264 is vibrated by the fluctuating magnetic field of the motor to cause pumping of air. The member 264 is resiliently mounted at 272 and is connected at its mid-point to a bellows member 270 equipped with air inlet valves 248, Fig. 2 (not shown) and an air outlet port 282 which communicates with the water in the aquarium. The motor is a shaded pole induction motor arranged to operate a water pump as described in Specification 1, 197, 332. A permanent magnet 260 mounted at one end of member 264 is located in the region of one shading coil 221 to be vibrated by the stray field of the motor. The magnetic coupling may be increased by forming projecting tongues 297, 298, Fig. 6 (not shown) on the stator core of the motor in the region of the magnet 260. The air pump is mounted in a separate housing 250 of plastics material secured to the aquarium by suction pads 254, 256, or by adhesive tape. |
