Reaction of the following compound with an oxidising agent results in preparation of the corresponding demethylated compounds in which either both R1 and R2 are methyl groups or one of the two radicals is a methyl group and the other is a hydrogen atom. When both R1 and R2 are methyl groups, the methyl group in the 3''-N position or both methyl groups are eliminated, but when one of R1 and R2 is a methyl group and the other hydrogen, the methyl group is eliminated. The resulting compounds are valuable antibiotics.
