The sanding accessory (1) attaches to a portable drill, and comprises a rigid circular plate (10) connected to a drive spindle (12). The connection permits articulation i.e. allows the angle between the spindle (12) and the plate to vary whilst the longitudinal spindle axis passes approximately through the centre (10x) of the working face (10a) of the plate. The arrangement permits the working face to follow a plane work face under nominal spindle (12) inclinations from the normal, and the plate can receive disposable abrasive sheets (11). The connection incorporates a conical part (13) with an axial hole (14), the base (13a) fixing to the plate and the hole locating the leading spindle end (12a) clear of the plate.
