PURPOSE:To improve lighting properties and reduce the size of a microwave-generating apparatus by providing an auxiliary device for starting a discharge lamp which concentrates electromagnetic field in a space onto the discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:A projection 12 made of the same material as the tube body of a discharge lamp 6, such as quartz glass is integrated with the outer wall of the discharge lamp. An auxiliary body 13 for starting the discharge lamp which is made of a metal wire is fitted in the projection 12. Concentration of electromagnetic field occurs at both ends of the auxiliary body 13 for starting the discharge lamp, to make the electromagnetic field more intensified even when the electromagnetic field caused in the space before lighting is weak. The intensity of the electromagnetic field in the discharge lamp can be made higher than that of the electromagnetic field when the discharging is started, and thus the lighting surely achieved. |
