Blood pressure monitor using pressure sac - uses photoelectric non-invasive techniques for continuous measurement

A close-fitting sleeve (1) with a pneumatic pressure sac is fitted over the patient's finger (2). In this sleeve are a light source (3) and a detector (4). The pneumatic connection to the sleeve is connected to an electro-pneumatic converter (10) and a pressure gauge (6). The supply of air or gas (12) is fed to the transducer. When the appts. is first attached to the patient, the monitor is calibrated by closing a switch (19) and adjusting a potentiometer until the gauge reads the appropriate pressure. The light detector is used to monitor the blood flowing through the finger. As blood pressure increases the light level will decrease and vice versa. An amplifying system (7,8,9) is used to provide the feedback control to the converter (10).
