A method and a device for controlling ignition energy cause high ignition energy to be fed to the spark plugs only when the internal combustion engine is operating in an instable operating state. The instable operating state of the internal combustion engine is determined by detecting the difference of the maximum speed of revolution of the internal combustion engine within a specific crank shaft rotary angle or by detecting the low-frequency oscillation which is produced by the internal combustion engine. The ignition energy is controlled by calculating a suitable pulse width of an ignition signal or by changing a high voltage which produces plasma within the cylinder. The device according to the invention for controlling ignition energy has a crank shaft angle sensor (1) or a sensor (5) for low-frequency oscillations, a computing and storage device (3) and an ignition system (4) which, if necessary, comprises a power source (42) for producing plasma. <IMAGE>
