Two sheet material elements W 1 , W 2 at least one of which contains thermoplastic material, are joined by applying ultrasonic vibrations along a line of finite width by a blade or tool 10 to the elements W 1 , W 2 held against the raised surface of a pattern defining means 12 so that the ultrasonic vibrations are perpendicular to the raised surface and causing relative movement between the means 12 and the ultrasonic vibrations in a straight-line path transverse to the line of application of the vibrations. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, for continuously manufacturing shirt cuffs, two webs W 1 , W 2 , which may be fabrics made of or containing thermoplastic fibres, e.g. a polyestercotton fibre mixture, are fed from rolls 18, 20 over anvils 12 straddling a pair of chains forming a conveyer 22, the upper run of which passes over a fixed support 24. Each anvil 12 comprises a plate 12a formed with a flange 12b generally rectangular except for rounded edges to define the cuff border and a boss 12c to form a buttonhole reinforcement. An ultrasonic welding tool 10 comprises an elongate head 13 having a slightly tapered working tip 13a and vibrated by transducers 14 coupled thereto by shafts 16. Preferably, the axis of the flange 12b is slightly skewed on the plate 12a so as to be inclined to the elongate tip 13a. After welding, the cuffs are individually cut by a head 30 comprising a blade coacting with the outside edge of the flange 12b and are deposited in a receptacle. A vibrating device 32 is provided to shake free any cuff which has failed to fall clear of the scrap which is taken up on a reel 34. Superimposed upon the ultrasonic vibration of the tool 13, there may be a vibration of relatively low frequency imparted by a rotary cam 200, Fig. 6B, periodically moving the tool 13 downwardly against return springs 202. Alternatively, the apparatus may be used for welding a thermoplastic film to another thermoplastic film or to a fabric. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the conveyer 22 carrying the anvils 12 is replaced by a rotatable cylinder (50) having pattern flanges (52) thereon and the working tip (54a) of the vibratory tool (54) may be a tangent to the cylinder or tapered in the direction of rotation. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), thermoplastic containers (O) are carried by a conveyer (122) and covered by a web (W 3 ) ultrasonically welded thereto and subsequently cut by a tool (130).
