A centrifugal separator for removing dirt particles and liq. from flowing gas and formed as a cylindrical container with a closed base wherein the sepd. materials are collected has a double cylindrical wall inset into the upper container section to form an annular cavity into which the gas stream is tangentially directed, with outlets for purified gas in the form of concentric rings at the table top. Above the gas inlet level the annular cavity is narrowed by a radial inward step from the outer container wall, and the gas outlets are in this narrowed region. The inner wall of the double cylindrical wall is eccentric w.r.t. the container wall, and the gas inlet is at the narrowest section of the annular cavity or offset by 90 deg. therefrom. A valve actuated float can close the extn. outlets. Flow resistance is low, and entrained solid or liq. materials is efficiently removed. The radial step stabilises vortex conditions inside the container.
