A lock for fixing the barrel of a trench mortar to a base plate comprises a quick-release snap closure fitting over the spherical base of the barrel; the base plate is of a material having a high mechanical restoration coefficient at least in the region of the hemispherical seating and the locking zones for the closure. Pref., the base plate in this region is a laurin lactam moulding which, when heated, does not melt but disintegrates in air at 217-271 deg.C and cannot be regenerated; it has a metallic sound. The pref. commercial material is "HARDOMID" (RTM). By using for the base plate a material of considerably greater resilience than steel the forces that act upon the closure when the mortar is fired are considerably reduced. In addition, the difficulty associated with dirt getting into the steel joint and causing wear are reduced. Consequently, the life of the joint and base plate are increased and mfr. is simplified and made less expensive.
|
