Mercaptan oxidation catalysts for sweetening sour petroleum distillates comprise a metal chelate (e.g. a phthalocyanine) and a quaternary compound of the structural formula
where each R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical containing up to 20 carbon atoms, R<1> is a substantially straight chain alkyl radical containing from 5 to 20 carbon atoms, R2 is aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, and X<-> is the chloride, bromide, iodide, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, phosphate, acetate, citrate, tartrate or hydroxide anion, impregnated on a solid adsorptive support. The catalytic composites are especially used for trating sour petroleum distillates containing the more difficultly oxidizable mercaptans in the presence of an oxidizing agent and an alkaline reagent (which may be the above quaternary ammonium compound in which X is hydroxide).
|
