An underground structure such as a tunnel is constructed by advancing a series of bodies arranged end-to-end, one-at-a-time. Between certain of the bodies are disposed advancing mechanisms such as pulling/traction jacks (2) and thrusting jacks (3). Connecting members (4) in conjunction with fasteners (6) and traction members (5) in conjunction with fixing pieces (7) may be used selectively to link together certain groups of the bodies so as to allow their advancement one-at-a-time. The advancing mechanisms the fasteners and the fixing pieces are selectively operated such that when one body is being advanced, at least two other of the bodies (or one other body and a fixed mechanism) provide a reaction to the force required to advance the one body.
