Method of limiting the welding energy transmitted to the workpiece in ultrasonic plastic welding with the aim when welding plastic mouldings of melting only a defined volume in the welding zone and subsequently interrupting further energy supply via the vibratory unit. For this purpose, an electronic circuit forms a value proportional to the mechanical energy delivered by the ultrasonic transducer. If this value exceeds a limit value, the energy supply to the transducer is interrupted and the welding process is ended. The electrical no-load power of the ultrasonic transducer is not registered when forming the energy-proportional value.
