1,075,735. Flash evaporators; desalination of sea water. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 10, 1966 [April 16, 1965], No. 10534/66. Heading B1B. The final stage D of a multi-stage flash evaporator 10 is divided into two sections 66 and 67 by a weir 65 such that pre-treated make up solution fed to section 67 for deaeration is not withdrawn from section 66 with the blowdown but is all circulated through the evaporator stages with the portion of the enriched solution which has not been blown down from section 66. Solution, e.g. sea water, is pressurized by pump 49 and is heated in passing through heat exchanger 48 in the evaporation section 28 of stage D. After rejection of some of the heated solution the remainder passes to vessel 53 for pretreatment with a chemical additive (e.g. sulphuric acid), for preventing corrosion and/or scaling and is then sprayed into section 67. The weir height is such that no make-up solution can penetrate into section 66 but enriched solution is able to spill over into section 67, the mixture therefrom being circulated by pump 73 through condensing coils 45-47 and heater 57 to stages A-D. Incondensible gases are vented at outlet 78. |
