<p>The windmill rotor is mounted on a horizontal axis and may be used to drive an electrical generator. The rotor runs on a shaft which is coaxial with two cylinders, the rotor just fitting inside the inner cylinder. Downstream of the rotor there are a number of openings in the inner cylinder, connecting it to the space (II) between the two cylinders. The flow of air between the two cylinders helps to accentuate the pressure reduction in the region (III) behind the rotor, and thus improve its performance. The auxiliary air flow through this outer region also helps to contain the noise produced as air is emitted from the inner cylinder after passing through the rotor blades.</p> |
