The invention relates to a process for treating waste liquors containing diazonium salts by which environmentally friendlier waste liquors can be obtained. The waste liquor is treated with sulphite ions in such a way that the diazonium salt reacts with the sulphite ions. If the waste liquor contains both phenolic compounds and diazonium salts, the waste liquor is then treated with an oxidising agent, for example hydrogen peroxide. The process according to the invention is particularly useful in the treatment of the so-called nitroso waste liquors, which are obtained in the preparation of p-nitrosophenol.
