Appliance and process for setting the distance between an appliance for dispensing charged, particulate material and an object to be coated, for monitoring the amount of material dispensed and for setting the voltage between the dispensing device and the object. The appliance takes account of irregularities in the profile or the contour of the object to be coated and in the movement of the object in the direction transverse to the direction of movement of a conveyor device. The charged particles move towards the object under the influence of the electric field in the direction, to be deposited there and to coat the object with high efficiency. The appliance monitors the current which results from the flow of electrostatically charged coating material particles towards the object and uses this signal for the abovementioned purpose. <IMAGE>
