The invention relates to a method and a machine for folding and passing on stacked cardboard sheets for the production of boxes. The technical problem to be solved consists in providing a novel method for folding the stacked sheets mentioned, by means of which the disadvantage of possibly folding two sheets simultaneously is avoided, as well as in providing a novel machine which is suitable for carrying out the method mentioned and meets the conflicting demands of, on the one hand, accurate folding and, on the other hand, fast folding of the stacked sheets. The solution to this problem is achieved by a method which comprises an auxiliary phase in which the sheet (1) lying on a stack (3) is separated, before folding, from the sheet (2) lying underneath by lateral displacement towards a folding station partially offset relative to the said stack (3). <IMAGE>
