The spark ignition i.c. engine comprises a fuel injector (5) whose nozzle orifice is arranged adjacent to and upstream of an inlet valve (3). It is directed with the air flow through the inlet duct (2). The sparking plug (11) is arranged in the combustion chamber (4) in the inlet flow direction, with its electrodes (10) shielded by the inlet valve stem (8). Direct impingement of liquid fuel on the electrodes is largely avoided.
