The automatic rudder for a sailing boat holds the direction fixed in relation to the wind direction, using a wind vane to sense the wind direction and a pulley linkage to a trim rudder mounted on the trailing edge of the main rudder. The main rudder is mounted so that it remains vertical despite roll of the boat. The rudder is mounted on a vertical shaft carried in a horizontal carrier whose outer casing is fixed to the stern of the boat. The vertical shaft carrying the rudder is hollow and contains a vertical rod which has pulleys at top and bottom to accept the belt coupling to the wind vane and the belt coupling to the trim rudder. The trim rudder thus alters the course of the boat till the vane points into the wind.
|
