When hydrocarbons float on the surface of water or the sea as the result of an accident, they are confined to a specific area by a floating boom. The boom consists of a vertical, flexible, and floating wall forming a tank; the base of the tank consists of the water or seawater on which the oil floats due to its lower density. The pref. boom consists of two long strips of elastomer made of natural- or synthetic rubber or similar materials. The strips are joined together along both longitudinal edges, and one edge is provided with ballast. The space between the strips is filled with air or inert gas to obtain a vertical, inflated boom. A ship can be used to locate the boom round floating oil, so the latter is confined to a specific zone and the oil can be reclaimed.
|
