The detector material used in thermoluminescence dosimeters comprises sintered bodies based on magnesium borate with the addition of an activator, namely dysprosium, thulium and/or terbium, and the addition of a coactivator, namely borates of lithium, sodium, potassium, lead and/or aluminium. According to a further embodiment, the detector material mainly consists of calcium sulphate with an activator addition of dysprosium or thulium and a coactivator addition, namely borates of calcium, magnesium and/or aluminium, and/or a mixture of boric acid and aluminium oxide. Manufacture involves compacting the powder mix in a conventional preforming press (pelleting press) and sintering the pellets obtained at elevated temperature. It is possible, by employing special boron or lithium isotopes, to provide so-called "Albedo" dosimeters which permit separate and simultaneous determination of neutron and gamma-ray doses.
