The invention relates to a safety device for a driven piece of equipment with a dead man's control, which is normally pressed into a first position and can be moved by the operator of the equipment into a second position, having a helical spring which has essentially cylindrical inner and outer surfaces, a drive shaft which extends partially into the interior of the spring, specifically into one end of the latter, and a driven shaft which extends partially into the interior of the spring, specifically into the other end, furthermore having a rotatable annular element which partially surrounds the outer circumferential surface of the spring, the rotation of the driving shaft tightening the spring radially towards the shafts so as to connect the driving shaft to the driven shaft for as long as the dead man's control is in the second position, and a movement of the dead man's control into the first position leading to a radial expansion of the spring so as to decouple the driving shaft from the driven shaft and couple the rotatable annular element to the fixed annular element in order to bring about a braking action between them. <IMAGE>
