Vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate are hydrocarboxylated to give α-acyloxypropionic acids by reaction with carbon monoxide and water in a liq. reaction medium using a tertiary organophosphine-stabilized Pd catalyst, and by adding the water required for the hydrocarboxylation during the course of the reaction such that the amt. of water present in the reaction medium is always less than the stoichiometric amt. The ready hydrolysis of the α-acyloxypropionic acids affords a convenient route to lactic acid.
