The ground anchor resists a pull with a horizontal component, having a pointed (9) stake (6) driven into the ground with the point leading. The stake inclines from the vertical in opposition to the force being resisted, providing anchorage for a line (7) which is secured by a pin-jointed coupling (8). The point of cable attachment leads the centre (G) of passive earth pressures acting on the stake, and the stake is driven with the cable attached. The cable is then subjected to traction to bring it into a normal relationship with the stake. The diameter of the stake exceeds that of the cable, and the soil may be slit to aid the final cable movement.
