A pumping unit (21) is mounted on a driving unit. The pumping unit has a membrane (24) clamped between upper and lower halves (23,22) of a casing. A pumping chamber is formed in one half and a driving rod (27) attached to the membrane projects out of the casing. The casing is made of a high strength material of sufficiently thick section to withstand the stresses of high pressure pumping. The driving unit contains a shaft with an eccentric (14) which acts on the driving rod projecting into the driving unit from the pumping unit. It can be made of lower quality material and thinner sections.
