The artificial leg has hydraulic control for when moving and standing. It is used after a thigh amputation, and has a ram between the thigh and shin portions. It also has a pivoting foot, the load on the heel controlling the ram. The double-acting ram is mounted behind the single-axis knee-joint, its cylinder being eccentrically accommodated in an outer one so as to leave an annular chamber containing two externally-adjustable throttle valves for the swing movement, an externally-adjustable throttle valve for use when standing and which can be shut off allowing knee bending while supporting a load, and two non-return valves stopping the flow from cylinder to annular chamber. At the bottom attachment point of the ram there is an externally-controlled standing stop valve halting the bending movement. The upper part of the joint has a divided knee spindle and a quickly detachable rotary adjustable adapter with a tapering boss clamped by three screws.
|
