The invention provides a method for determining the amount of free fatty acids by the action of acyl-coenzyme A synthetase on free fatty acid in the presence of adenosine triphosphate and coenzyme A, the action of acyl-coenzyme A oxidase on the resulting acyl-coenzyme A in the presence of oxygen and the development of a colour owing to the resulting hydrogen peroxide, which method is characterised in that the development of colour by hydrogen peroxide is effected by a colour-forming system which contains an acidic reagent, the pH which is preferably maintained during the action of acyl-coenzyme A oxidase on acyl-coenzyme A being from 6.5 to 7.5.
