The organoleptic properties of tobacco prods. are improved, augmented or modified by adding one or more caryophyllene derivs. of formula (I) (where (a) R1=H, R2=Me, and R3+R4 is a bond; (b) R1=H, R2+R3 is CH2 and R4=H; or (c) R1+R3 is a bond, R2=Me and R4=H). (I) are generally added in amts. of 10-2000 ppm, but amts. ranging from 1 ppm to 10% can be used. Cpds. (I) impart various flavour and aroma notes to tobacco smoke, e.g. woody and reminiscent of cigar smoke and "Turkish" tobacco. |
