Stable colloidal catalyst for oxidn. reactions is prepd. by reacting Ru tetraoxide with an inorganic carrier in water. The carrier may be reduced titania, a carbonyl of a Pt metal reduced powders of semi-conductors, e.g. SrTiO3, or powders of noble metals. Carbonyls are pref. Os3CO(12), Ir4CO(12), and Rh6CO(16). The carrier becomes coated with a thin layer of Ru dioxide. The catalyst pref. contains, as stabiliser, a water-sol. (co)polymer with mol.wt. 5000-100000, e.g. a copolymer of propylene glycol (I) and ethylene glycol (II) (claimed), polyvinylpyrrolidone, or a polysaccharide. The pref. stabiliser is a 0.5 wt.% aq.soln. of a 70:30 copolymer of (I) and (II) with mol. wt.20000. Decomposition of water in presence of the catalyst is claimed. A cell for storage of solar energy, contg. water and the catalyst is also claimed. The catalyst can also be used to oxidise exhaust gases from combustion engines. Decomposition of water can be coupled with redn. of, e.g. CO2, to methanol or intermediates. The catalyst retains the colloidal form and the catalytic activity for several months.
|
