Process for the preparation of 3-acyloxymethylcephem compounds

Compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which the symbols have the meanings stated in Claim 1, are prepared from 7-acylamino-3-hydroxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid or from its salts by reaction with a compound of the formula <IMAGE> The resulting compounds are, where appropriate, converted into 3-CH2R<2>- or 3-CH2R<2'>- derivatives by reaction with a heterocyclic thiol, or with an optionally substituted pyridine, quinoline or isoquinoline, or into corresponding 7-amino compounds by deacylation. The compounds I can be used as intermediates for the preparation of antibiotics of the cephalosporin series.
