PURPOSE:A base oil of a lubricating oil, containing an oxyalkylene ether of a specific phenol, and having improved heat resistance, viscosity characteristics and lubricity without generating sludges, and capable of being soluble in water. CONSTITUTION:A lubricating base oil containing usually 30-100%, preferably 70-100%, oxyalkylene ether of a phenol having a molecular weight of 400-3,000, preferably 500-2,000, expressed by the formula (Ar is benzene or naphthalene; R is aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl; n is an integer 1-5). Preferred examples of the oxyalkylene ether include oxypropylene ether, oxyethylene ether and (oxyethylene- oxypropylene)ether. |
