A filter cake (25) is formed on a filter belt (2) permeable to liquid and this filter cake is discarded at the end of the belt filter (1). The filter belt (2) is alternately moved further along a timing section (4) of constant length and stopped for a treatment period. During each treatment period gas-tight treatment chambers (21 to 23) adjoining each other are formed from a pressure cover (16), arranged above the filter belt (2), with the surface of the filter belt (2), carrying the filter cake (25), the pressure in the treatment chambers being elevated. Compressed gas can be used to increase the pressure. The mixture can be continuously introduced into the first treatment chamber (21). Washing liquid and a drying gas at superatmospheric pressure can be passed into further treatment chambers (22, 23). A receiving vat (10) arranged beneath the pressure cover (16) below the upper strand (5) of the filter belt (2) traps the media penetrating the filter belt and leads them away unpressurised. <IMAGE>
