Sulfonamide dervatives of the formula <CHEM> wherein R is H, halogen, nitro, CF3, alkyl or alkoxy; R1 is H, Cl or alkyl; R2 is H or CH3; L is Cl, Br, CN, OH or a variety of organic groups; R8 is H, CH3 or OCH3; W is O or S; A is <CHEM> X is H, Cl, Br or various organic groups; Y is CH3 or OCH3; Z is N or optionally substituted CH; Y<1> is H, CH3, OCH3 or OCH2CH3; and Q is O or CH2; and their salts, exhibit herbicidal and planth growth regulant activities. They may be formulated for use in conventional manner. The compound may be made e.g. by reacting a novel sulfonyl isocyanate of general formula <CHEM> with the appropriate 2-aminoheterocycle of formula A-NHR8, or alternatively by displacing one or both chlorine atoms in the heterocyclic moiety of a novel sulfonylurea of general formula <CHEM> by the appropriate alkoxy groups. Further methods of preparation are also disclosed.
