PURPOSE:To make mechanical strength high, prevent the gas permeation from the outside and improve durability by interposing a specific metallic spacer between the light transmittable substrate and rear plate of an electrochromic display device (ECD). CONSTITUTION:A metal selected from the group of Ti, Ta, Al, Mo, W is provided as a framelike spacer 5 between the light transmittable substrate 1 and rear plate (a thin plate of glass, metal or the like is used and can absorb the volumetric expansion of electrolyte 8). The spacer 5 is opened with an electrolyte injection port 11 and a fine hole 12 for the lead wire of the counter electrode. The metallic frame 5 which is passivated of surfaces, if necessary, or is coated with a resin so as to be prevented from being attacked by electrolyte is used and is joined to the substrate 1 and the rear surface by using an adhesive agent. In this way, the spacer 5 has good dimensional accuracy and high strength and has no permeation of gas; hence, the long-life ECD is obtained. |
